"Shadows"

Chapter Two

Seven years later they were still exactly the same, maturing together and growing into fine young men. Well, Zane had, anyway. Justin was still unsure what or who he was and just what his worth exactly was. Depending on who was being asked, he supposed.

His eyes found the barn to the right of the field and the old country-house beside it. It was where Rhydian lived. The field belonged to his family and Justin rented it, much to his parents distaste, who of course tried their hardest to buy the land right from the Sands family without much luck. Although it was perfect, as if God Himself had pushed Justin and Rhydian that little bit closer together, Justin never took advantage of the fact. When he was with Zane he never looked towards the house, even if he saw movement in the windows looking out over the fields. This was the one place in all the world that belonged to only Justin and his best friend.

A car zoomed along on the road behind Justin and it forced him out of his thoughts. He lowered his foot back to the wet ground and unfolded his arms. Time was up. Again. It seemed to pass faster and faster with each day that came. Was that what happened with age – or was it depression causing the speed of time?

“See you later, Zane,” he said softly.

Zane lifted his head and watched until Justin was safely back inside the car. Justin studied the horse one last time and then started the engine. It was time to go. Time to face what was always waiting for him at the end of a school day. His family.
